I started carving the ball and cage from WCI #42 and I quickly ran into problems. I was starting to rescale the worl to fit the piece of wood I was using and couldn't why it was designed the way it was. The main body was made up of 2 parts, one 2 inches and the other three inches long. If I use these measurements won't I end up with the cage disproportional? I can't understand why both sides wouldn't be 2 1/2 inches long, in order to make the piece properly balanced.

Hi Wes, Good question. I'm still not sure why exactly Dusty used those measurements. Since you are going from the top section of one side down to the bottom section of the opposite side, the centerline is only there to give you a reference for the ball. Since the ball moves around inside, the location isn't too critical. Bob Duncan Technical Editor |

I don't remember if he said this or not, but just in case he didn't ..... don't be in too big a hurry to free the ball up. Get as much shaping done as you can with it still attached. Your fingers won't get nearly as tired. They are a fun project and everybody ought to do at least one. Teaches you a lot about whittling.
