Hi Steve, welcome to the board!
Check out www.carvingpatterns.com for instructions on doing a ball-in-cage.

There'll also be a ball in cage article in the next issue of Carving Magazine.

The direct address for the ball in cage instructions is http://www.carvingpatterns.com/spoons/ball-cage.htm . I believe the article in Carving Magazine uses a golf ball in the cage. Done by soaking the carving until it is a little flexable and then pushing the golf ball into the cage.

I hope this helps,
Don

Hi Steve,

The best books for patterns for 'whittler's tricks' are
'Whittling And Woodcarving' by E.J. Tangerman (A MUST READ for any whittler) and
'Old Time Whittling' by Keith Randich

These books have everything from 'simple' ball-in-cage and chains to more complicated round ball-in-ball cages, ships in bottles, fans, wooden puzzles, pliers and pocketknives made from single pieces of wood, and matchstick figures.

They can be found at Amazon and several of the carving suppliers may also carry them.
