Question Ball in a Ball

Hi there. My name is Michael and I have been carving on and off for years. Generally on the off though. I picked up an interest in carving the Ball in a Ball and had a question for you all. I have basically two flexcut knives. The carvers and the detail knives. I have a block of wood that is two inches in diameter and was wondering if you thought that a new knife would make this project go easier on me. I've done chains and ball and cage pretty good but have not tried the ball in a ball yet.So far I have taken the block and smoothed out the corners and it's coming together as a ball. Any thoughts?

Michael

I don't think you will have a problem. I've carved a ball in a ball with just a pocket knife. Those Flexcuts should be more than adequate. Just keep them sharp.

Hummmm .... Have not heard of such a thing before now. Would it be safe to assume that you start with a cube, carve a ball in it (like ball in box) and then carve the cube into a ball?

My philosophy has always been "use what ya got" so I would have to say take "stab" at it with those flexcuts. I don't see a reason why they wouldn't work.

I've done a ball in a ball before...not much more difficult than the ball in a box. Those Flexcut knives should be fine, but as with any carving knife they need to be sharp!
