Default Back problems, what seating

As usual when I need advice relating to carving I refer to this group.

As I've got older by back is a recuring problem.

Given the large amount of members here I can n't be the only one.
I know that there is only one cure for age, and that is not attractive.
So how do others avoid this back problems. What seats cushions etc helps?

Any ideas would be welcome because this is getting to be a major pain in the ..... back.

Hi John;
I use a really good office chair with a good back support and it has arms and castors, so I can roll around and not get up and down alot to get things around the workshop. It does get lots of chips stuck in it but it is worth the relief for the back.

The same type of chair for me too. Except that it is higher than a normal office chair and has no arms. But the back is adjustable and supports my back well.

When I retired, I took that stool I was using at work with me. It is old but works well.

I also use an adjustable vise that I adjust to be able to work without bending over.

It's this type of laboratory chair

I use a steno chair that looks like Gilles' (without the footrest and with a full length back) that is made entirely of oak wood. It was Government issue during and after WW11. It is adjustable for seat height, back height , and resistance of back to pressure. I find it very comfortable.

I have a friend with a very bad back and he carves in his recliner. He uses a big beach towel to catch the chips and he only carves items that can be hand held. He said that his back doesn't bother him when he's in the recliner.

Like Deborah I use a good office chair. Where I work sells the outdated models to employees at a very good price ($25) when they upgrade.

Depending where you carve, but as with many of the others, I use a good quality office chair, adjustable , with arms and back support. Height adjustment is important, to get it at the right height for your bench or desk.

If you carve standing at a bench, you may want to use a tall stool, like a bar stool, and also, don't bend over the work, raise it to work on it vertically. There are a number of vices or jigs you can make to do that.

Thanks foks ,support seems to be the key word. I do n't knowif crving is the root of the problem but I carve a lot. I'm going to try the office chair and see how it works out.
Many thanks
