Default Ash tray question

I was interested in carving some wood ash trays.
My question is what would you finish it with. I'm guessing some sort of polyurethane, but i am not sure if it will burn of leave marks.
Any advice is much appreciated.

I don't think it would be a good idea to put any finish on them. That would be some toxic smoke and you would probably give someone a real bad high!

Decades ago when there wasn't as much of a social taboo about smoking, you'd see wooden ash trays with a clear glass ash tray insert. That might be the way to go. We have a turned wooden ash tray holder my dad in law made that was like that.

Sharon had a good suggestion. If you can't find a real ash tray insert, check the scietific supply houses or university supplies for glass petri dishes.
