Trying to be an artist, is like trying to be humble. You just can't get there from here. !!!!!!!!

Cool Re: what is an artist?

I have an older brother who is an artist, and has been an art teacher and had stuff sold before. Living as a younger brother and not seeing perfect results when I tried to draw or paint--actually, pretty crappy results, at first, insued--I grew up with the idea that I was not good at all at art, and couldn't even draw a straight line.
People generally aren't "naturally" gifted usually, though I didn't know that then--also, skills generally don't come directly from some Supreme Being--at least, usually people aren't born being great at doing anything--it comes from lots of hard work.
It's like the old story about how a person can get to Carnegie Hall--practice, practice, practice!--or, how so-called "over-night successes" are really a result of years of hard work, and the luck of being noticed by the right people at the right time, eventually.
I still am far from "perfect", but I create art that I and my family enjoy, anyway, and the few people who have so far seen it--I wish I could get my digital camera to work with this Dell computer--may have to get a new one, when any money comes my way--and I try to do better and learn more about carving whenever I can...I still don't think of myself, and maybe never will, as being an "artist", but anything a person makes can, I suppose, be considered to be "art". What's the difference between a person who is "humble" and one who's "realistic"? One difference could be, the person who is "humble" recognizes their own imperfections but continues to forge on, while the "realistic" person often will give up, upon seeing their imperfections, and believe there's no point to continue on, since they can never be as great as someone like a Michelangelo or Rodin.
Too much rambling....sorry....back to my "art" now....

Is there a difference between an artist and an artiste? Inquiring minds want to know.

No they don't!
