Default An "Art" question, and looking for examples

Folks, I'm struggling with a horse (other posts) that is a test series prepping my skills for a chess set. This is my first foray into carving.

And I find I like it. But my main hobby is furniture building. I have kids, neices, family, and they all want chests and bookshelves and what not. So carving statuary is many years down the road. HOWEVER, I want to start incorporating elements in my furniture since I enjoy it so far.

What I DON'T want, as it is not my taste, are shells, fans, claw feet, or other "early american" repro style elements. I'm also not a big fan of chip carving. I recognize the skill and artistry involved, but eh, it's not me.

Do you all know of any examples (pictures) of "flat" carving that is abstract or non-cliched? I'm looking for some inspiration....

Art Nouveau might also be a style that would meet your needs. Google the phrase and see what's out there. Lots of vines, flowers, etc. It can get pretty abstract if that is what you want. On my backburner (actually, waiting until I feel good enough to do it) is a mirror frame covered with flowers and vines.

It's hard for me to know what would "meet your tastes", but I guess I have the same feelings you do about some of the more formalized early American type elements. I don't personally find them exciting. I don't feel that way about the much more free-flowing and dynamic Art Nouveau design elements.

Art Deco design elements might be another option.
