I have an oak tree tree (about 20" diameter trunk at the ground) that needs to come down due to bacterial leaf scorch. My outside deck is built around the tree about 1-1/2 feet off the ground. Rather than take the tree completely down to the ground and patching the deck I would like to see if tree carving is an option. I live in Tabernacle, NJ (zip 08088) in the Pinelands Reserve Area which is in South Jersey about 30 miles east of Philadelphia - between Phila and the Jersey Shore. If you do this type of work in the area, please let me. Anyone you know I could contact? Reply to this post or e-mail me at KurtJWilliams3@Comcast.net. Thank you. |

Welcome! Maybe it's just the do-it-your-selfer (is that a word?) in me...but I'd say get some gouges and give it a shot yourself! We'll ALL be here to help out! And if you spend the money you were going to spend to have it carved on tools, you'll have most of what you need to keep carving! Bob Duncan Wood Carving Illustrated |

You should talk with Colin, he does that and he does travel some to carve them.

I checked out Colin's web site. His carvings are outstanding. I sent him an e-mail. Thanks for the lead. Kurt

T-katt, I know there is at least one person, possibly several, in the Delaware and Montgomery Co area outside Philly. I have seen several pieces of work and my family has sent newspaper clippings of wood sculpture out of old trees in that area. Some one could be as close as the yellow pages, or search DelCo news, Main Line Times or Inquirer. There are also some carving clubs in that area. Feel free to PM me if you need some more specific info or stuff I'll have to dig for, but I'll get back to you. Of course it would be interesting to have Colin drop by. Good Luck, I think this is a very do-able thing. Jim |

Because of where you live , I know the area well , been to Franklinville many times. Your about 4 hours or so from me. But from the way you described your deck , would it be possible to cut it high enough above the deck to turn the tree into a lighthouse carving? I would think that possibly adding an electric line up you could cut the lighthouse and then add the light so that you could enjoy the tree, your deck and add a bit of additional light for the dusk and latter hours. Anyway just a thought but the upper section of the Cape May lighthouse would make an excellent carving and conversation piece for friends. Garry McKinney |

Gary, The lighthouse is a great idea especially since my wife loves the New Jersey shore and the deck is also by a pool. Do you do carving work for hire? Thanks. Kurt |
