Hello all, I haven't been around as much lately as I'd like to. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in the day and they all keep getting used up! Red Face It looks like I'm going to have to go to the D.C. area next week. Are there any woodcaring attractions or stores in the area? I won't have a car but I'll be near the metro. thanks, mikeg |

mikeg: There's a Woodcraft store in Springfield, VA, that might be walkable from the Franconia-Springfield Metro, which is a 1/4 mile SE of the Springfield Mall, right next to the CSX railroad tracks (distance looks like about 1.5 mile walk...) Store web site is http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/store.aspx?id=327 so you can see where it is. I know Fairfax County has bus service from the Metro, but don't know which line might go near Woodcraft. There's also one in Leesburg, but the Metro doesn't go anywhere near there. You could always visit the Smithsonian America History Museum, if it's still open. It's on the Mall, so it's fairly easy to find, but it's supposed to be closing soon for two years of renovation. There may be other woodcarving related stuff, but I don't know about it. Claude |

Thanks Claude, That's the sort of info I was looking for. I love going to the Smithsonian. I'll have to wait to see if I have the time this trip. mikeg |

Mike , I never thought of Springfield, the first one I thought of was Rockville for the woodcraft store. But It is really off the beaten path. But if you want to see some great carving check out the Washington catherdal .. the place is amazing! and is open to the public. Everthing from the handcarved stonework to the inside carved fixtures, is just unbelievable and it is close to rail or a quick taxi ride. Not your normal carvings like we see here but really great work . Oh and unless it has changed it is free. Ash |
