Default Antlers

Has anyone tried carving out of deer antlers? I have a couple short ones that I was thinking of turning into letter openers.

Hi Dereks

The dust is bad for you.Be sure to wear a good dust mask when carving any antler.

ive carved a few. the larger they are the more likely they will be pourious in the center. Tom Wolf has a walking stick book where he showes how to carve wood spirits in antlers. and i will second the dust being harmful. wear a mask for safty but they also stink when being carved

Thanks for the info. I had heard around that the dust was bad, but I wasn't sure. I'll probably wait and carve it in the summer when I can have the garage door open to help with the smell. Bit cold for that kind of nonsense right now.

You don't need ANY antler dust up your beak. How many ways are there to spell NASTY ????
Outdoors (NOT even in an open garage in summer.)
I have a ShopVac hook-up for shell dust when I'm carving shells but nothing less than that.
