| | another type of "spirit"? I'll post few pics of this shaman's staff in a little while, but I'd like your opinion. There have been several great examples of wood spirits posted in the past. This is a staff that I cleaned and 'sort of' carved. The grotesque facial features were actually part and parcel of the staff itself, and only needed a little enhancement. The eye features didn't show up well in the photos as they were very subtle, but there are actually 'pupil-like' contrasts in the wood. Next time you are walking in the woods and feel like you are being watched, check beneath tha bark of some of the standing saplings, especially the twisted ones. You may be surprised. ed in Picture trails under Other Stuff

| | | Re: another type of "spirit"? Al, that staff is way cool. I've often felt those eyes on me while strolling the woods - there are more spirits lingering around in the woods. I think they like the cool breezes.

| | Re: another type of "spirit"? Wow interesting staff, now I have something else to watch out for in the woods. Besides rattlesnakes, gators, black widow spiders, and panthers.

| | Re: another type of "spirit"? Thanks for the comments! I thought this was an interesting piece to 'develop' more than carve. It definitely was NOT a good piece of carving, but interesting in the natural features that were there, just awaiting a little enhancing. Sometimes, it's just neat to see what we can find, rather than what we can do!

| | Re: another type of "spirit"? A good piece of carving is in the eyes of those viewing it. It was a great piece ALA and Glad you shared it with us. In looking at that staff, it was interesting to see natures eyes looking back at us.

| | Re: another type of "spirit"? I guess you are right, Ken......I entered several carvings in the local county fair, and the Shaman's Staff won a grand champion ribbon, quallifying it for entry into the Michigan State Fair competition, next year. Over the years I've had four other grand champions but have never been able to get down to Detroit for the fair (we are 650 miles from there). This one totally surprised me.
