The box is now finished. I painted the top cover and used a high gloss finish for the green leaf portion. Everything else is finished ultra mat. I think that the contrast of both finishes gives it a special touch. It is not something I would normally do, but I did it because I didn't like the natural look of the wood of the cover.

When I showed it at the wood carving class I had yesterday, somebody had the same feeling. She said she also normally prefers a natural wood finish but she liked the effect it was giving to this project.

It turned out beautiful. Your hands held the tools no matter if they had a motor on them or not, it's all made/ carved with your hands and imagination. Nice job!

Thanks...

Well, it was "really" all done without any power tool, and the worst part was the sanding, all done by hand too. And just for that, it will never be for sale.

I have ideas for some more, and I could use a band saw and a disk sander on those because I want to try different kinds of wood like maple for the bottom and a darker one for the top which I'm not decided on yet. I expect those wood to be too hard to be worked by hand only.

I'm crazy about wood, but I'm not crazy...

Gilles

But I have a problem... The basswood I used for the top is whiter than the bottom, and I was wondering what to do with it.

Should I keep it like that, add color to the top, or what?

Btw, the tail of the leaf is from the same wood than the bottom, it is glued on the cover. The reason is that I first carved it with the bottom and then realized it would look better on the cover. So I used a knife... and now it's on the cover. The overall look is better, and now the leaf is still complete when I take the cover off.

When I mentioned that the first box I made was "hand carved"' I think I should have said "hand made" instead, which means hand carved AND that I used hand tools for all the wood working.

So "hand carved" could mean that a band saw and an electric drill where used, but that it was then carved by hand. I suppose it's just playing with words, but sometimes it's good to realize these differences. But then, I'm not even sure I'm right. "Hand made" could just mean that some items were not made on a machine, and that they are made one by one by a manual worker...

Thanks,

Gilles

I like the 2 different colors!! Very nice great job !!

After looking at the first photos, you are giving me regrets...

I think I will make another one and keep it natural... I also begin to like the old look...
