Default Another Elm Tree Carving in progress

I know I said after the last Elm I did that I would never carve another one. Well I lied I am out in this extream heat carving another elm tree. The lady was so insistant that I do this for her that I relented and did it for her. This is just a in the initial stages I should have it finished tomorrow and will post pictures of the finished product. The tree as I said was a Dutch Elm it was killed by the Dutch Elm disease. The tree was cut off at about 13 feet I then debarked the tree. You can see by the six foot scaffold how tall it is. I am never carving an elm again it is way too hard and is a bugger to take the bark off. I know I said that before.

Colin, I guess we all assumed you were Paul Bunyan size. He looks excellent. How do you prevent further decay from the elm disease once the carving is completed?

Looking at your work just makes me know I gotta go get me a big log! Great work.

Susan

OOOP ... a moment of enlightenment! I have been wanting to do an 'ancient stone circle' for our yard. I can just see a Stonehindge of Colin's woodspirits!

Colin,
I can't help but agree with Ash, either you love it or it loves you! You two are a natural combination! You need to do a book...I'm serious...designed just to make people grin! Maybe a coffee table book, lots of great pictures, I think it'd really sell!
If you really want to try something else, come carve some live oak in Florida with me!
Can you imagine Susan carving a stone henge? Wow!!! Do you respond to dares, Susan? I double dog dare you! I can hardly wait to see the pics! I can't imagine you not having done some large carvings, just because I've been so thoroughly impressed with your work!
Again, Colin, I love the carving,...what was his name...ELMer?

Wade, I know better then to respond to dares! My real concerns come when I respond to my own imagination. Colin's work has just been mind boggling to me. The size, the details, and the outrageous boldness is just too much!

I saw this post just as we were sitting down to dinner last night and so I told my beloved hubby Mike about it. Now when I first joined the forum I showed my Mike one of Colins posts and he constantly is asking if he (Colin) has anything new yet!

I think it's the way Colin's has the photo ... this tall monolith sitting in the neatly mowed grass made me think of Stonehenge. Mike is a long time student of the history of the British Isles. Well, needless to say he joined right in. We have already decided that it would have to be laid out exactly on scale and placement to stonehenge. That all the faces should face in to the center point of the circle. Each spirit with a different face and emotion and the cap stones - lintel stones would be sleeping woodspirits.

Besides for the fact that such a project would take years to complete I fear that I could never do justice to it and achieve anything near Colin's level of work ... It's a mighty big leap to go from 12" tall 3-D dude cane topper wood spirits that take me a week or more to carve to reach for full fledged 12' tall Colins tree spirits! Maybe something for my retirement years.

Susan

Hmmm ... maybe I should think about buying a bigger chisel?

Beautiful work Colin, but please be careful. Carving in that heat......asking for trouble. The tree will still be there when the weather gets cooler, and the good lady will just have to wait. Don't want you dropping on us! You have too many good years left in ya!

Bob

Susan,
A bigger chisel is definately the key! A gas or electric chisel, maybe lots of little chisels on a chain...that's the only way Colin could be so prolific with these wonderful tree Fellas!
Colin,
Bob's right--be careful in the heat, it can do permanent damage. Wrap a water-soaked bandana around your neck--it cools the blood flowing by--and wear a hat, wide brim (shade) if possible! Sweat is a good thing, it cools the body. When you quit sweating you risk a heat stroke. Drink all the water you can so you can keep sweating. (This advice comes from Florida, possibly the sweat capitol of the world...hey, maybe that should be a State tourism campaign...bad idea, hu?)
We want to see lots more of these great Fellows!
Wade
