Default Alternative to Band Sawing

I currently do not own a band saw and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to what an alternative would be for rough cutting your carving in the beginning. I probably will not be able to invest in a band saw until the beginning of the year but would like to get started on some original carvings.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

A coping saw will be very fast for roughing out.

Get some extra blades with coarse teeth for faster cutting.

Total investment would be about $20 and the coping can be used for many wood working projects.

Thanks Fred! I will take your advice and try the coping saw. I think that will probably work quite well for what I am going to do. I will probably go tonight and see if I can find one.

I appreciate your suggestions! Now, time to get to work!

A coping saw is an excellent choice for roughing small carvings. If you are going to do somewhat larger carvings, you may want to look toward a "bow saw". I doubt if you can buy them any more, but they are easilly made, and there are still blades available for them. Or you can do what I do and use broken bandsaw blades in the bow saw I made.

Here's an interesting site with some instructions on making a bow saw.

Here's another with saws (guess you can still buy them) and blades for all different sizes and uses.
