Mark is right about Allen Goodman's knife, especially his upsweep blade. His design of a handle is very comfortable to guide the slicing action of the sharp and flexible knife blade. Every carver should have a "Goodman" knife.

after seeing Allen Goodman's you tube video on shelve elf's i took notice of the construction convex? upswing on his knife with a belly as he mentions in the video several times,
although i think he uses a thin flexible steel for his blade construction, about a month or so ago, i ground down a scrapped straight razor into the configuration of his blade with a belly, while the high carbon steel of a straight razor's to hard to be flexible, the upswing in the cutting edge really makes carving them shelve elves a cinch,

i think its partly due to less contact of the cutting edge with the wood due to the curve in it,
your not left with so much judgment when carving the tip of a flat-straight edge knife..

its been my latest favorite knife most recent for sure, glad i put a purdy handle on it...

Like Thomas said, the design of the blade that Allen Goodman makes with a up sweep of the cutting edge and the sway back curve of the back of the blade makes for good "coming out of a cut" in a slicing action since the back clears following the path of the cut. I am sure this is an adaption of the "tupelo or cajun whittler" design which has a three to four inch blade. The "tupeolo" design on a shorter length blade makes a very nice style of a carving knife. I have adapted many of my knives into this shape which I have discovered for the style of "whittle-carving" that I do is better for me than the traditional "wharncliff" straight cutting edge common on so many carving kinives. Ralph Long makes "tupelo" knives as well as a shorter version. Bob Barts also makes "tupelo" style knives, as well as Dave Lyons. So there you have it, Allen Goodman, Ralph Long, Bob Barts and Dave Lyons all make great knives in the style and styles that will fit our carving fancy. Thanks to these special "friends" of the carving world who provide a great service, and oh yeah, one can never have too many knives.
