Default all about rough-outs need advice

I am not sure if this should be under General or Holiday Carvings as I carve Santas and little animals etc.. but I am using rough-outs now to learn.. I just ordered four rough-outs from Rossiters and I really wanted a short ,fat squatty Santa.. but they didn't have any.. something that is eight inches or over.. I think it would be fun to carve chubby short Santas.. I can see them in my mind but need a model or rough out.. Does anyone have any idea where I can find some Santas like that in a roughout? I also would like to know how many people are using roughouts and would like to hear form them to ask some questions about them.. Thanks for your help ..Charlotte

Charlotte, you can do a google search of "caricature carvers of america" and see some of each of their carvings for ideas....also do a search for Santa roughouts...or lol maybe even fat santa roughouts......sometimes takes a little digging but most things are there....except try to find a picture of a miner squatting down panning gold ha ha.

Mark Akers (Carolina Carver) has some also.

Check out his Santas and Rough outs to see if that is something that you may be interested in:

Thanks guys, that should keep me busy for awhile... I see lots of carvings in magazines that have the short Santas but I guess they make their own patterns... I said..about eight inches but I got to thinking.. It would take a big piece of wood for one that size to be round and squatty...lol so guess I would have to go shorter to get the effect... I have seen them on ceramic bisque, lots of good round Santas but I would have to make a pattern if I ordered that . Maybe one day it will hit me like a ton of bricks and I can see the side view in my mind or at least figure out what goes to what... Maybe someone that does roughouts will get on here and tell me where one is...lol I will get on the web and type those things in.. Thanks a lot.. Charlotte

Hello, woodwittler... I did a quick check on Jonnels site and they had three about the size that I would like.. I could change them to suit what I wanted so that would be good .. Thanks.. I will get in touch with them to purchase them... This is a good start to finding more Santas... Charlotte

I met Jon Nelson at the woodcarving show in Denver one year....he is an outstanding artist and carver and pictures don't do his work justice...he puts out an amazing group of carvings at these shows!

Thanks Dave , I am going to give him a call... Just what I had in mine but use my own style... I could carve quite a few from those three... by changing them some.. His designs are quite clever.. Charlotte

Hey Charlotte,
How in the world are you? I've been remiss at touching base with you. Hope your summer is going well.

I sometimes use roughouts just to save time. I rarely carve them like they are meant to be--poetic license--I guess. But if I can find a roughout in the general shape of the finished carving that I "see" in my imagination, and there's plenty of wood there to adapt it, I get it and change it to suit my needs.

I've even tried a very large basswood egg to make a scrunched-down santa--so don't just look at Santa roughouts.

Take care.

Hi, Donna, I have missed hearing from you also.. I didn't think of using something else for a Santa.. Thank's ,that's a great idea.. The Santa I just got through carving did have on different clothes ( pants , shirt and suspenders.) I put him on a one piece suit with buttons down the front..Old World look... You couldn't tell a thing from the knees down ..even in the picture that came with it.. so I had to make up my own...such as it is...I am fumbling my way through and slow as Christmas, but I just love it and am at my happiest when I am carving.. Still can't believe I am going at it? I am looking at that angel that you sent Curtis right now.. and remembering how happy you made him... I just ordered four rough outs from Rossiter's and three from Cindy Joshlyn... so that should keep me busy for quite awhile... Can't wait for them to come.. Thanks for the suggestion.. Charlotte
