Which is better an Adze or a Inshave for bowl carving? I thought a inshave would wok better since it has two handles you can have more control. Now I am not sure since I have never seen someone use a inshave and thought there might be a reason for that.

An Adze will remove a lot more wood quickly but with much less control and you have to have a secure method of holding the blank. An inshave/scorpe will remove wood slower but with much more control and while you still have to hold the blank securely not nearly as much as with an Adze. When making a seat for a Windsor chair you start with a Gutter Adze for the roughing out then use a Scorpe for the refining of the shape and then a compass plane for the final shape and detail. Depending on the size of the bowl I would think a similar progression would work. Ed |

I found both a scorp and a inshave but they are different. Inshave: Inshave - Lee Valley Tools Scorpe: http://www.kmstools.com/scripts/products/cat.php?92&63<->2<->64 |

The bowls I make never will be any more than 8inches in diameter. Gouges and a hook knife just doesn't work fast enough for me. I thought a scorp would do the job fine for me. My current project is making a 4in diameter bowl. Will a scorp be sufficient for my projects?
