Almost done with an Acanthus leaf carving from a diagram in Everett Ellenwood's "The Complete Book of Woodcarving." I wanted to try carving Red Oak because of the beautiful color and open grain structure, so I bought a 3/4" thick plank from Home Depot, transferred the pattern with carbon paper and cut it out on my funky little Craftsman band saw. I white glued it to a piece of plywood with typing paper in between to ease removal when done. I was curious to see if my Pfiel gouges would be up to the hard Oak, and found they powered through it very nicely. I may end up sanding this piece to bring out the grain. I'll post some pics when it is done. |

Very good, David! I'm a big fan of acanthus leaf carving. Though I hear that some professional carvers tire of carving it over time the basic design and various interpretations/ styles seem to me to offer endless challenges. Good Luck with future carving, RussL. |

Great job, Dave. I really like the grain. Can't wait to see it done.

Well done. That's a classic design and a great place to start with acanthus carving. The trick now is to see how well you can complete it without sanding it. You've done a fine job so far. Mike
