Default ABC,ChildsBlock

Last Sat.while looking through a antq shop,didnt really see much and on the way out of the shop,I noticed a basket full of the old wooden ABC Blocks that children played with sitting on the floor in that booth.

My wife looked at me,surely you are not thinking what I know you are buying this $1.00 childs block for?? Darling why would you think that?? And I smiled and said,sure its wood isnt it!

An old block and I thought it would be a snap to carve the pine block but too my suprise it was tough and hard{they made things better back then},plus carving against the grain didnt help either. The block is 1 5/8 inches and the carvings are 1 3/8 inches inside each of the three blocks Id carved and painted with acrylics. I will apply some feed & wax on them to bring out the colors and the wood more.

Blocks carved;
1.Me and my 1st girlfriend,Lilly

2. One room mtn school house with a outhouse

3. Boys playing marbles{old red headed Butch always won}

As always your thoughts or comments are always welcome.Thks'Forrest

P.S the redheaded boy{Butch} is on his knees,his foot is out behind him,kinda hard to figure that out in theses picts.

I know why your wife let you buy them blocks! It was either them or the dining room table would end up as the next object of your carving! Nice job Forrest! Brings back memories!

Hello, my good friend.....I find so little time to be on this forum these days, with all that I have going on in my life, but I happened to come here and caught your lil' ABC block! Is there no wooden object that escapes your watchful eye?? What amazes me more than anything with your creations, is the detail you put into each little segment of your carvings. For instance, I love the fence in the backgroud of the "boys" and the dolly with you and Lilly...LOL and the trees and the outhouse in the schoolhouse. The pictures, as small as they are, are amazing in themselves, but your attention to detail is astounding. Your painting, as we all know, is unsurpassed and this will be a very valuable piece of folk art someday. I'd kill to have it. LOL One thing about you, my friend....there are no dustbunnies under your feet. Once you're up and about, with knife in hand......nothing wooden is safe!! Imagine what you could do on those knotty pine walls of yours!!! Great job on the block, my friend! Bonnie

Great idea! Those should be great sellers. Everyone will want to have a particular memory carved on the block.

Forrest, well you've done it again, what a fine job you did with those blocks. Man, they sure bring back some great memories, even at my age I can remember having those as a kid, dang, sure wish someone had the thought to save those wonderful blocks.

Bonnie my good friend,your kind words here humble me. Yea I thought the old fence behind the boys shooting marbles would be a good back ground,only fault was I started with the school house and ended up with more of the caricature looks with the other two carvings.
I might carve another one but this one took too much time. I carved on it and painting all the subjects which took 12 hrs,I only work/carve about 6 hrs a day.

I dont know how to thank you my ole friend for your always neat comments and your compliments but they make me even try harder with my carvings plus coming from you a talent carver as you are means alot to me. Thank you so much and Im gald you liked this child's ABC carved block. I wish you could hold this block in your hand then you could see more of the details and how deep its carved,the picts only show a rough over all of the carvings.

Once again,thank you so much! Forrest
