I see in the woodspirit catalog to use a 1/4 inch number six gouge. I get the number six part but most gouges comes in mm. So what would a 1/4 inch gouge be in mm?

One inch is approximately 26 mm so 1/4 inch would be approximately 6 mm. Take a look at flexcut.com they state their sizes in both inches and millimeters. Hope this helps, John |

There is a comparison chart in the tool section, just do a quick search. Dave |

For a quick calculation on a relatively short measurement John's methods works well, and it's about as good as you can hope for in shopping for tools. But if you want to get precise 1" = 25.4mm. Fractional inches in thousandths of an inch will get you right on it. Example 1/4" = .250" X 25.4 = 6.35mm. Conversely 1mm = .03937" so then 6mm X .03937 = .2362" (15/64"). You can take the old machinist out of the shop, but you can't take the shop out of the old machinist... LOL!! Another big plus is that it drives my wife crazy! Good Times! L.P.

Rick, think about diving into the wood with a #6. The wings are a bit spread out, doing tight hollows isn't possible. You might want to do a few side-by-side cuts with a #8 or a #9 to accomplish the same task. #6 is a profile that I've never considered buying. I have #3, #5 but jump to #8 (Pfeil).
