Default 4 in 1 staff

I took a break from the larger carvings to work on this unusual shaped staff. There were four kinks in it so I carved four little woodspirit faces in each of the curves. I then put on a stain/sealer to bring out the details. The staff is over 6 feet tall. The character that is supposed to look like an old salt had a pipe in his mouth from a branch in the joint but the branch was brittle and broke off. Enjoy.

Cliff,
Like your son, I was the same way when I got into carving. I couldn't produce them fast enough. Yes, your son and I have been corresponding and he plans to carve a similar carving as the NA Indian I showed here a while ago. He must get his talent from his old man as your both very good carvers. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Alice. Yes this was unusual. I was going to cut it down in the spring but my friend who helped me get some wood a few weeks ago said "get it now as the beavers have been chewing down trees all around it". Not very practical...but it makes a good conversational piece. Get your camera out again so we can see how your staff carving looks.

Patrick, I don't know how you do it! You seem to get as much detail on a 4-bend staff as you do from a big mallet and chisel carving! Those 4 faces are wonderful quality carvings in a very small space. As usual, I am amazed! Bonnie

Well...that's a very nice compliment....especially for someone who has done very few woodspirit staffs. I typically do large carvings. The biggest challenge I find with these small woodspirits is the the eyes. I'll see what I can do. Always glad to help as other carvers...as they have helped me out.
