Default 3rd rattle.. white limba

Today, I took off the day from work since it is our Thanksgiving - and the weather was great! So, after a walk with my wife and son, and puitting him down for a nap I whittled out another rattle.

This one is from white limba - sometimes called Korina - which is a wood with grain similar to mahogany, but is light in colour and lighter weight.

It was the first time I carved it, although I have worked with it in my woodworking shop several times in the past.

It carves VERY nice, much grainier than basswood - similar to butternut but softer.

I did a 5 bar rattle, based off the design in the whittling special issue. I find the 5 bars are plenty, VS the 6 which leave much less room to get your knife in between the ball and cage.

Here is the limba one, and another shot with the basswood (also 5 bars), and butter nut one (6 bars as in the magazine). I think I might just start a rattle collection

Joseph is still sleeping so he hasn't tested it out yet!

AJC

Very nice Andrew! Either your little lad likes long naps or you can whip out one of those pretty dang fast! Either way you did a great job on them.

Andrew, nicely done! At that rate you'll have aroom full by the time the grandchildren arrive.

Gary - If you blink twice they will be 50 and you'll have grand children at the age of 21.

That would be a LOT of rattles.. Lol, i carry about 25 or more species of wood, and much of it too hard to whittle (at least too hard for me).

I bet I make another 2 or 3, still have some good softer carving woods yet to try

Andrew, I would like to do a couple of those. In which issue did you find the design?

It was in the "WHittling" special issue, which I picked up off of the newstand here back in July I think.. or early August. I remember it was right before I went camping.

It had a lot of excellent smaller sized projects to keep me busy for a while

I think it is still available through the site as a back issue for $10 or so...
