My wife works where they put all the beautifull stone in your homes. A lady brought this wood in for them to match it with some stone. My wife found just what she wanted, asking about the wood, the lady stated its Virgin Pine,we bought the old 100-150 yrs old house for the floors in the kitchen to re do them and put them in my new home we are building, She let my wife keep the sample of this wood. Ive had it under a lamp here in art room for over 2 months, cause it was full of sap but to my suprise,I started carving on it Friday and it still had sap in it in places. Finally carved a big C for my wifes name on top plus some roses on each side. It fits her pinky finger. Just thought Id share this about it after I ckd about it on line; True heart pine is only from the long leaf pine, also known as long needle, long straw, southern yellow, hard, pitch, heart pine and Georgia pine, among other names. The natural range of longleaf pine extends from southeastern Virginia to east Texas in a belt approximately 150 miles wide adjacent to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It dips as far south as central Florida and widens northward into west central Georgia and east central Alabama. This type of pine is called "heart" because when it reaches maturity the tree is mostly heartwood, taking 200 years for a tree to become 2/3 heartwood. Or known also as Virgin pine. I hope you like it cause it will be the one and only Virgin pine I try to carve.lol Thanks for looking,Forrest

Hey Forrest, another winner there I see and some great info to boot. Thanks for sharing. I was actually thinking of making myself a ring from some lovely timber that I carved some bangles from. I think you have inspired me to give it a go. Joe.

Nice ring, Forrest - I would have thought that the nice tight grain would be easier to carve... How does it compare to the cherry you often use? Claude |

That's a gorgeous ring you carved, my friend....I could never tackle anything that small, nevermind the hardness, the roses or even the "C". I'm sure Connie loved it, but it had to be brutal to carve! I don't know how you do it!! Bonnie
