Default 20 years ago and still a favorite of mine.

I was taking some photos today and thought I would share a carving I did 20 years ago. It is still one of my favorites. It took less than a hour and is one of the easiest carvings I have ever conpleted.

A storm ripped a branch from a White Pine Tree. The face is carved on the portion of the limb that grew inside the truck. It was ripped out in this cone shape. Wish I could find more like this.

Very nice, the unusual wood adds to it's charm, but the detail on the face is first-rate.

That's pretty nice! Sometimes the wood just shows you what it's supposed to be....anything else just doesn't look quite right. Thanks for the idea...will have to look at some of stock of wood a little differently....see if there is something like this in there!

That's a very amazing carving John! If you did that 20 years ago, I can only imagine the carvings you do now... You certainly helped that little guy emerge from that wood quite well...very natural looking! Be sure and post a few more photos of your more recent carvings, we'd enjoy seeing them! Thanks!

Hi John,

That's a great carving. What you found is a pine knot. There is a lot of resin in it. That's what makes it break away like that. Do search. Lot's of other threads on it.

What a terrific little carving. No wonder it is your favorite. Nice detail and lovely colours and contrasts. Joe.

This was not a pine knot in the traditional sense. It was not Yellow Pine; it was not old; it was not hard; it was not full of resin.

It was White Pine; down less than a year; not any noticable resin; and fairly soft as White Pine usually is.

In my area we have a lot of Yellow Pine and I am aquainted with "Pine Knots" and how they carve. This was just a lucky find. A fellow carver is a lead surveyor on a crew and spends his days in the woods and picks up alot of wood. This was one of his finds. I was buying some found wood from him. This was the one piece he really wanted to keep. But since I was buying a good bit He agreed to give it up.

Thanks for the comments,
John
