| | 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP This tsunami relief thing -- a little 2x2x3" block shouldn't be such a problem, right?
Well, it's making me nuts. EVERYBODY'S gonna see it !!!!!
I learned that I don't own a 5/8" drill bit and had to dig out a 5/8" "spade bit" (??) and I've never touched a "spade bit" before.
If you drill a 5/8" hole in 2" of wood there's very little wood left to carve on.
I've started and discarded 3 blocks.
I can carve a simple Santa face, can't I?
Somebody, please, offer suggestions.
Bob - could I send you a plain white block and call it North Dakota Winter? |

| | Re: 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP Hello Nancy,
You can carve anything on that block, and a Santa will be perfect. One of the blocks I will send is a Santa bust. Go take a look at this page and there a numerous examples of cane blocks carved. http://carverscompanion.com/W3E_FCD_Home.html
Have fun with it!

| | Re: 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP Nacy, If I can carve a face in 2x2x3 block YOU can, too! Course mine's not finished yet, so.......
Maybe you could do a relief on four sides of a santa face? Or a relief of one side santa face, and another one of your doves, and another a chickadee, and another....well, you get the picture.
One thing about these canes (my opinion, anyway) is that they look more like long skinny totem poles than canes.

| | Re: 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP Nancy ma'm.....drill the hole first in a piece of wood and then cut out the block to size on the band saw. Much easier than trying to hold on to the small block!

| | Re: 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP I did drill the hole in a slab 3+" WIDE (so grain would run correct direction) wood using the 5/8" spade bit in the drill press ---- then cut out my wobbly 2 x 2 block and tried to even it up.
Over and over and over. lol
Then I started carving ........

| | Re: 2 x 2 x 3" - 5/8" hole HELP actually, I cut the 3x2x2 blocks first, then put in a drill press and use a forstner bit....with my bench top, I could only drill partway, then move the table up with the bit in the hole and drill somemore and so forth, with my floor model, I can drill all the way thru and only have to backup to release sawdust.....the forstner is really the only way I can think of to get a good clean hole, spades are a bit uncontrollable and chip a lot | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
