Default 1st Basswood Chain

I am sure this has been done before and talked about.I was given a piece of basswood from a local carver here in Billings.I told him I never carved basswood before so he gave me a piece and said carve a chain out of it.I am not looking for any critique except it was fun to carve and a challenge to keep from breaking the links. It would be fun to take on a chain on a larger scale.Davy

OOOOH! This is just great! I was just told that My Great Grandpa Carved a chain and my cousin has promised to send it to me...since I am the only carver in the family. How exciting you posted a picture! It turned out really great. What an heirloom you have made!

Hey Davy, great little chain, I"ve seen a few and often thought I might try one one day, you can get really hooked on those from what I've heard.

Thank you all for your kind comments.Forest,I like your idea about carving a lock into the chain. That is a good .Maybe I can carve a small one, paint it gold and give it to my wife,LOL.It was a fun project even if it is beginning carving 101.

woodtrapper, A fellow named john gaddis in south texas gave me my first carving lesson about four years ago and he made me carve a three foot chain laid out exactly like yours. He insisted that when I was finished I would know how to handle basic carving tools. He was correct,I still have that chain hanging on the wall and have fond memories of my first day as a woodcarver every time I look at it. Just this week I decided to promote myself from beginner woodcarver to idiot woodcarver as I caught myself thinking of carving another one. BORING!!! lol good job on your chain,Arnie
