Default The 100 Birds Project

Early this month I thought I'd try my hand at the "comfort bird" project in the Winter issue of WCI. Armed with a fresh cutout and my new Foredom power carver, I proceeded to butcher a piece of mesquite into a vaguely bird-shaped form. The beauty of that wood never ceases to amaze me.

I then made birds from Eastern Red Cedar, mimosa, mahogany, black cherry, and Osage orange, all in a single weekend. Then I got the crazy idea to make birds from as many different woods as I could lay my hands on.

Thus was born The Hundred Birds Project: 1 year, 100 birds, 100 types of wood. That's right. I'm going to carve those little birds from 100 different types of wood within the next year.

Nuts? Perhaps. But I'm going to have a lot of fun and I might actually learn something in the process. My wife's going to have a big collection of little birds. Wonder what she'll do with 'em all.

Go for it , Jim. Don't think you're a nut but an exciting wood carving project and journey you've chosed. Looking forward to seeing your 100 birds.

Hmmm, sounds like a Hitchcock movie to me. Good luck, keep us posted. I can't even manage 8 reindeer, or a dozen roses.

sounds like a pretty neat idea, Jim. You'll learn alot about different types of wood, and get LOTS of practice at carving comfort birds. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures!

A grand project for sure! 100 beautiful little birds, each made from a different wood. Besides having some nice little bird carvings, what an elegant way to compare the beauty of different woods. This will be a super educational tool as well. Take good pics eh.

Jim: if you post mailing address & size of wood needed, maybe Santa might send wood of different kinds!!!!!

USPS says if it fits (in box) it ships

What an awsome idea! Your birds are pretty. Please keep us updated when you do new ones. I'd like to help with woods..but it will have to wait until spring for me to get out into our woods and cut pieces for you.

Marcia.
