| | your opinion please stock size for basswood I was wondering how many carvers have the same problems selecting the size of stock to order when getting basswood.
i'm like a kid in a candy store i am lost until i take the time to fill out the order sheet.
without a bandsaw im limited to 2" stock becuse of restrictions of my scrollsaw. or too much waste with my tablesaw...
maybe asked a different way: Do i buy 3 each 2x2x12's or 1 each 2x6x12" cost is relatively the same?
except glue ups have to be made if i want to carve a horse and have only 2x2x12's
what thickness do you select to get the most projects use of your wood. |

| | Re: your opinion please stock size for basswood Hey Thomas, I find myself in much the same predictament as you. No bandsaw. My solution has been to carve smaller. I buy the 2 x 2 "study sticks" and adapt my carvings to that size. Most of the carving I do is much smaller. Wife says I'm just to cheap to buy larger pieces of basswood. Maybe she's right. Because those study sticks are very cheap (in price). Tom H |

| | Re: your opinion please stock size for basswood Just my opinion, Buy what you want Thomas.
I do buy larger pieces abd saw them down but I buy pretty close to the deminsions I need also.
Has nothing to do with being cheap TomH, Buy what you want or need. most wood suppliers will cut to your needs.
Again, JMHO! |

| | Re: your opinion please stock size for basswood OK two great opinions.
one in the same boat as me for dimensional limitations..
except i have the 2-1/8"x16" limit on the size of my scroll saws,
i came to the conclusion i don't have a tool bigger than 7/16" wide guess you would say miniature tools and 2x7x12 more match the tools i have,
so i went with the 2x7x12 this time i got 4 under 30.00 delivered. so if summer was any indication of my carving production ill be in stock till spring.

| | Re: your opinion please stock size for basswood I do have bandsaws, but at times I will use a thin kerf blade on my tablesaw. A bandsaw blade is approx. .025-30 and a thin kerf sawblade .091. Yes more waste with a tablesaw, but faster cut. I will also use a tablesaw to clean a surface before bandsawing. GT | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
