Default Are woodspirits considered Caricature Carving

Hi gang,
I usually post on the General Carving board but I have to ask you this question? I recently entered one of my bark carvings in a competition. I was told to enter it in the relief carvings I did so and it won first place. When all was said and done I had some of the other carvers come up to me and advise me that I should be entering it in Caricature class. Some others said it should be Misc class. I dont enter these competitions enough to know and with all the expertise on this message board I thought that I would ask you. If you are interested or would like to see the carving it is on the Picture Trail web site under woodspirits 7ft Bark Carving. ???

Colin,

Which category a carving fits depends on the competition rules.
Some places (clubs) have a category that covers ALL bark carvings.
Some clubs say Woodspirits belong in Mythical Characters.
At some clubs your carving would compete with carvings over 30' in height.
Yes, it could be in the Relief Carving Category at some places.

Hope this helps you out.

Blue Ribbons sure are nice to get!!! Keep up the good work

Colin,
I agree that it depends on the rules of the competition. I'm seeing more competitions have a specific class for bark and log 'spirit' carvings. They would not always be caricature because in the true sense of the definition for caricature, some feature would be exagerated--so the figure could be totally realistic without an exagerated feature (like a realistic face of a person.) It could be fantasy if it was a wizzard or Santa--they would have to be of non-real people or things.

Relief generally refers to the back side being flat, so if it was a bark carving, it could be relief.

All that is said to just reinforce the need for clearer definition by the organization that sponsors the competition.

But then again, there's always someone who didn't win who will question and second guess every winning entry. And I guess we're all that way sometimes.

thanks gang,
I can see it depends on the club or the competition where carvings are placed. I can see where all of your comments could present a bark carving in any of those category's I dont have any complaint's I was just curious.
