I agree that it depends on the rules of the competition. I'm seeing more competitions have a specific class for bark and log 'spirit' carvings. They would not always be caricature because in the true sense of the definition for caricature, some feature would be exagerated--so the figure could be totally realistic without an exagerated feature (like a realistic face of a person.) It could be fantasy if it was a wizzard or Santa--they would have to be of non-real people or things.
Relief generally refers to the back side being flat, so if it was a bark carving, it could be relief.
All that is said to just reinforce the need for clearer definition by the organization that sponsors the competition.
But then again, there's always someone who didn't win who will question and second guess every winning entry. And I guess we're all that way sometimes.
