Default The Wood Chopper-Finished

Finally managed to dig this guy out of the snow this afternoon so I could take some photos of him. I am really satisfied with the way he turned out. There are lots of additional photos on my blog along with an explanation of the piece.

Comments welcomed.

I like all of your carvings but this one is really nice. I like the snow effect you have on this one and his expression. I kind of thought that maybe the expression came from one of your days chopping wood a couple of weeks ago. Yes very nice one as usually.

Wow ..What a great piece ..I saw it when it was unfinished .. and the painting just make's it come alive ..The scarf over the ear's is so effective of the cold .. and the snow job just makes it so real ..
great job
P.S. The red nose is a great touch ..

The snow base was made from a piece of 3/4" plywood as a base and another 3/4" piece of MDF. I cut out openings for each leg and then cut the legs off to correspond with the bottom of the snow. That way it actually looks like his legs really extend all the way down in scale. Don't think the effect would have worked otherwise. Used a Kutzall to shape the base then sanded the Bejeezus out of it followed by a gazillion coats of filler, primer, more filler and then finished it off with a few coats of Kilz primer and Testors Dulcoat. Looks good.

That's another great carving! I like the red nose too. That leaves no doubt about how cold he is. Great detail and expression. I hope you're planning on the Dayton show in 2007. I enjoyed your booth but didn't get to spend enough time there. Mike

Great carving Lynn. I am shivering just looking at him. As good as the carving is photographed, I can only imagine how good it looks "in person". Tom H
