Two Flat Plane Hobo's

I have been experminting with two types of flat plane carving .. one the way Harley Refsal uses and teaches and is identical to the flat plane carvers like Trygg and Axel Peterson used of long ago .. and a more modern day way of flat plane with the same concept and tools .. but a little more different style and shape ..

These are the two Hobos I came up with ... The first one .. the more primitive style of long ago .. Carved from pine


And the second one .. am more modern day style ... carved from basswood

What do you think ?

they are both outstanding, but i think i like modern day version better, it seems to have a little bit more to it.

Hi Gene,

Very nice work. A very interesting idea to carve one in each style, it shows the evolution of the technique.

I personally like the simpler look of the primitive style, but I'm not sure exactly why (maybe because the planes are more vertical?). It would make a nice tutorial Smile

I also like the older carvings for their social/historic value, as they show clothing, occupations and characters from the past.

Gene, I must confess they are both really great styles and carvings! If I had to vote I woul choose the second one. But..... That could be because of the extra color in the painting?

You do such a great job carving flat plane style, thank you for continuing to help us and encourage us in our carving journey!

OH, Gene; I quess it's not manly to swoon, but damn, those are fine. I especially like the second one, the modern one. This second Hobo has retained the older flat plane look with more detail. Outstanding!

i still think flat plane looks too unfinished, but i prefur the second,

ive tryed the flat plane
but i got to tinker with and round off the planes to much to call them flat plane,

the style of the second if worked a little more finished would make any fine hobo cowboy or other charter,

but the topic was flat plane so (never mind - edith)
