Default Tickets Please!

I carved this old man 'freestyle', using a Trygg carving of a sailor I saw on Ebay as inspiration for the facial features (nose, eyes, crows feet and chin-warmer beard). He's much skinnier than the Trygg.

Although he has a scrawny neck, he has had a rough life, and lost most of his left ear in a bar room brawl ( :-) ).

This is my first real go at making eyes something other than a black dot.

He is made from 1" x 1" and is 4 1/2" tall.

I thought he looked a little like a ticket collector.

Next one I will try to get him to smile properly, and I'll do the boots without creases.

I'm still trying to buy a Trygg!

Yea he looks like a ticket collector that hates his job! I like him! Nice work! Plus your washly painting adds to him which allows some wood to show.

Nice job again, Pete Tn~

Thanks for your comments Forrest,

I normally carve with the grain running front-to-back, which makes the face detail hold better, but shows up grain less well. In this one I (inadvertantly) turned the blank 90 degrees, so that the grain shows up on the side, which makes it look like the stripes in tweed. Had some problems with the nose though!

He looks great. But I don't think he'll make a good ticket collector with his hands in his pockets.

LOL - I was just thinking the same thing...I was going to 'make' him into a train driver at one point.

I'd finished the body before the head, and only came up with the 'ticket inspector' tag when the head was nearly finished.

The hat was originally going to be a flat-cap, then a sailor's cap...what it ended up as is anyone's guess.

I'll have another go with a ticket punch and ticket in hand...anyone know where I can find a picture of a 1920s Swedish train ticket collectors uniform?
