| | there goes my pawn's my wife ask me to take a couple of my pawns.... That I'm carving for four chess sets , I'm making for our four boys..(Cowboys and Indians)...cut off the base and place the head on a bottle....these bottles are 1870-1900 vintage..I found them ( plus a million more ) 15-20 feet below the ground while digging out a structure for southern pacific rail road...... there were old Chinese broken plates..mixture of bottles also...... its not there now but there was suppose to be a china town there in the 1850's-1910 and that the site was the banks of San Francisco bay ...now the bay is about 700 feet away ..filled in thru the years......I could be dead before I finish the chess sets ....so I'm giving our boys these bottle stoppers as a sample of what the cowboy part of the chess set could have been.....also makes my wife happy......happy wife ....happy life...and I'm very happy...happy.happy

| | Re: there goes my pawn's Great stoppers Jim. I like them. Yep, One of the best advice I gave my son before he got married was," Son, you can either be happy in your marriage, or , you can be right"!. He then ask me which one I was. I said I am ![004[1]1](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/004[1]1.gif) .
None the less, it is a shame that you had to cut the bases off but then, Equally nice presents for the boys. My hat is off to you Jim. |

| | Re: there goes my pawn's Nice stoppers Jim. I agree about the chess sets. Years ago my Dad and Mom gave me a uncarved chess set as a gift when I was just getting interested in carving. I think I got through two pawns before realizing just what a job it was going to be. I stopped before getting to the third pawn. |

| | Re: there goes my pawn's Jim, the carvings are exceptional, and the painting is great, I also really like the old ink bottles that you were lucky enough to unearth. I used to search for and dig old dumps many years ago and had several of those at one time. You are so right about the wife thing, I've been married 54 years, it's been wonderful. Please keep showing your great carvings.
