Default study sticks

any of you use study sticks or practice sticks or whatever for faces? Is it worthwhile to play around with them?

I have used them Rick. This question has been asked before and you will get varying opinion. The most useful ones are the ones you carve yourself I think. Mary Finn the author of Carving Egg Caricatures has 2 practice study sticks that is worth the price of the book alone. One on carving eyes and then eye's mouth and nose together. Also the stick that you make in Jack Price's book is very good.

a study stick will show you how,

a practice stick will allow you to practice the face,

id think to attempt to carve 5 or 6 faces on a stick, would be better than messing up 5 or 6 full sized carvings while your learning...

I've got two of them and for me they've been of no help what so ever. If anything they confuse more than help. My brain gravitates towards the step by steps rather than the study sticks. But the bottom line is that nothing replaces getting a fellow carver to show you the ropes.
