I am finally starting to put some pieces together and make carvings that have some character. This is variation of Harold Enlow's step-by-step Hillbilly that I completed in a short afternoon of carving Wednesday. Let me know what you think and please feel free to give honest criticism or praise. I've been doing this for only a few months now and need any advise that I can get to improve my carvings.

I think he looks great. Very piercing look to his eyes. Love the the hillbilly wood spirit look to it. Only input would be to maybe put a crease between his eyebrows?

Looks to me that you have the basics down. Now just practice, practice, practice; plus some refinement and experimentations with some different expressions. All of which will become easier and easier. Good start. Tom H |

Your little guys brows and eye's are perfect, and his moustache and beard are very nice too! The only suggestion I'd make is position him a little lower on the block so you can give him some hair to go along with the great beard and moustache... He would great hanging from my big ole Cedar tree by my front door! I like him alot!!! Thanks for sharing... Kenn

I like the eyes and eyebrows, also the mustache and beard. But I'd suggest that the distance between the bottom of the nose, and the mouth be about half what it is. He has a stubby nose, but a rrreeeaaallllyyyy long upper lip. Starting a little lower on the stick would help to leave room for hair at the top. For someone who's only been carving for a few months, I think it's a really good effort. Claude |

Hey Guys, Thanks for the compliments. How would you suggest that I finish this one? Paint, stain, just clear coat? I continue to learn from each project that I work on. I have yet to try a finish on anything other than a walking stick.
