Default Small Garden Gnome/Elf

I'm not sure if this one is a garden gnome, or an elf...probably a garden gnome, since he doesn't have a beard and there is no fur trim on his clothing... He's standing on a penny, so you can judge the size from that. It's amazing what one can do with some scrap basswood .

Way to go Claude, it's a good way to use up those little pieces left lying around and fun to do, he turned out pretty neat.

Claude, Very cute! And very small! Gots two questions, for you and anyone checking the small garden gnome/elf out:

1. Which do you think is more difficult, carving small or painting small?
2. In carving competitions there is a category: Miniature Carving, that is described as anything that can fit into a 2 inch cube. Is there any category for the real small?

Again, well done Claude!

1. When something is very small, probably the carving is hardest for me, as I have difficulty holding the piece with my carving glove on. On this little guy, I "cheated" - I didn't cut off the stick at his feet until I was done carving. That let me have something to hold on to. I was also a little more careful to take only very small chips with my detail knife. I was afraid I'd lop off his nose, but managed to get through it with the nose intact. As for the painting, for most of the really small stuff, I use an 18/0 brush, tip of a toothpick or pin, etc. For fine painted lines, I've found that craft store Gel Pens work really well.
2. I've seen the 2 inch cube category in some of the competition rules, but have never entered anything in that one (yet). I haven't seen any smaller than that.
