| | Sleeping Hillbilly (Fishing Season) A work in progress, but needing opinions, dont be nice im looking for a remedy
Got this 6x6 carving of a sleeping hillbilly hes fishing leaning against a hollow tree hes got his li'l brown jug
so far ive been able to pull out the chips and make a reasonable likeness of his body parts,
Like any fishing trip, the wildlife abounds around him 2 squirrels and a raccoon accompany him during his nap, im planning some fishing accessories like bucket and fish on a stringer, and can fir bait.
i left his face for last,
lots of extra wood as now scrap wood fills his lap half across the crossed leg...
hat feet arms legs all pretty well carved but that face illudes me... hat seams to be a little high perched on his head almost the ufo floating hat syndromethinking i want him sleeping with his mouth open, full beard and moustache maybe a fly buzzing? but having trouble with the head and face, Link to my picasa album below, hopefully the picture stays linked theres lots of other pics on the album of him as to how i got this far.. LINK<<click here for more pics tn

| | Re: Sleeping Hillbilly (Fishing Season) Thomp, Personally, I don't see a problem with the hat as it sets. Not everyone pulls their hat down over their eyes when they take a snooze. Being a little high from partaking of the spirits, he may have just passed out hey?Looks good so far.
Just my take on it.
Keep on keeping on! |

| | Re: Sleeping Hillbilly (Fishing Season) Been reading Creating Caricature heads by marve Kaisersatt, little bit every night at bed time, for nearly a month now,
his method is starting to sink in, but having to re read each section every night over from the previous night, i feel like the movie ground hog day,
marve sure has a different teaching method.. its more on design and how to build steps to achieve a face, i tried to implement on this feller but, sleeping eyes wernt covered,
i think i got about 1/8" too much hide on the face i need to shave down, before i start whittling out the eye sockets, for the final setting,
mrve like pete leclare teaches steps about 5 or so different planes or levels when carving eyes,
guess ill have to leave it until i can see into the shavings left in place and get a glemse of what i need to do to finish up..
i know the photos will never show what i see its tough to evaluate a carving from pictures..
but the little feller has exceeded my expectations may be them new tools, i traded for, but somethings working right here for me so i better pay attention now as this guy comes down to the wire...
about the hat, thinking along with real situations with your head on a wall or tree it would make the brim rize if your wearing a stiff cowboy hat, but hillbilly hats are wore out, flemsy felt
who knows what it will wind up looking like, i may remove the hat and hang it on his foot in the end....
thanks for the comments and for looking. |

| | Re: Sleeping Hillbilly (Fishing Season) Thomp, Looks good! If you're worried bout the hat, you could have the fishing line all tangled up through the tree and snagged into the front of his hat. But I think it'll work out ok as it is.. Good job! Tom H |

| | Re: Sleeping Hillbilly (Fishing Season) Thomp, On the eyes, I would not get overly detailed as the eyes are shut so no eye ball, pupils are whatever. However, there still needs to be an eyeball behind those lids with a curved line at the botttom of the balls to show the shut eye lids. Clear as mud eh? Or maybe it is the sip'pin of the jug that isn't making it clear.
Anywya, you are well on your way my friend.
Tom H has a great idea on the fishing line tangled up and around.
Best to you and I kno, you will master this one. |
