| | Secret Family Recipe This is my latest project. This was my most time consuming carving project yet. Don't ask how long it took me because I didn't keep track. All I know is that I spent many late nights working on it. A called it 'Secret Family Recipe'. The figures and outhouse are from Mike Shipleys book. The rest are my ideas. Everything is basswood except the copper wire for the still and the 'Busy' sign on the outhouse. It's finished with an acyrlic wash and dipped in boiled linseed oil with burnt sienna oil paint and then sealed with Deft satin spray. The base is basswood and 11 1/2" x 14" which gives you an idea on the size of everything else. It's stained and sealed with Deft also. It was a fun project. If I had more time I could have added more items but I had to stop somewhere.

| | Re: Secret Family Recipe Nice job chipper! I agree with Hi Ho! You show far too much realism on the still. I wonder how? If you haven't tried "Beau" yet... give him a try. I found all of Mike's characters enjoyable to carve but he was really a lot of fun!

| | Re: Secret Family Recipe I love it but I am wondering how Hi Ho and Eddy know that the still is realistic? Now I, as a certified old geezer, can tell you that the outhouse portion is very realistic. Shows you that the "good old days" were not so good after all.

| | Re: Secret Family Recipe Chipper, that is very nice! The carving is great...cute scene....nice, clean cuts. I really like the finish on it. I'm going to have to try the BLO. Is the burnt sienna oil paint mixed in with the boiled linseed oil? I really like the way yours turned out.
I'm sure you put many hours of work into that and it shows! Thanks for sharing. |

Banjo, yes, the burnt sienna oil paint is mixed with the BLO. I just take maybe a 1/4" from a tube of oil paint and first thin it with mineral spirits and then pour it into a quart jar and then add the boiled linseed oil, put the lid on and just shake it real good. If it has sat for sometime before I'm ready to dip I just shake the jar real good before again to make sure the paint is mixed with the BLO. It seems after awhile the oil paint will settle to the bottom of the jar. FYI, this is what the Bishops use for dipping their carvings. The only difference is that I wait about 5 minuts and then wipe off with a paper towel and then spray with Deft satin, wait about 30 minutes and spray again. This was the first time I've done this and I am very pleased. The spray idea is from Mark Gargac.
