| | Scandinavian-Troll, from Woodcarving Illistrated. Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has carved the Scandinavian troll from the 2004 Woodcarving illistrated magazine? If you have could I see a picture, also I tend to always mess up my carvings, so if you have carved it I could use helpful tips. Thanks again |

Bcarvings, please don't sound so negative about your carvings......we have ALL had a lot of "not so great" carvings before we got a few that we thought were decent. Even now, after 50+ years of carving, some things just stump me (like this stupid puffin that I can't seem to get right)! I will get it right, by the way...it may just take several attempts, but that is part of the learning curve. May I make a suggestion, though....keep some of those carvings that you don't think are so hot, so you can look back in a few years and see how far you have progressed.
Also, many of the carvers here have had some experience or extra training in design, drawing, art, painting, sculpting or any number of artistic endeavors, so their "first" attempts at carving would have had a lot of experience behind them. I wish I had some photos of my carving attempts at your age so you could see what they looked like.......well, maybe I 'm just as glad I don't have them to show. Get the picture? You'll do just fine!

Frankenducks...............
As troll goes, there is no way you can mess up an troll because they where part of the nature (mostly hills) and did come in all the different shapes you could imagine.

Listen to these folks, they are absolutely correct. I have at least one picture of each carving I have done since I started and have placed them in a photo album. This is a good reference tool and also a good source of humor for me since I have come a long way from where I started but still have a long journey ahead. It's okay to be somewhat critical of your own work (not overly) so that you remain objective, and can see where you need to improve. It doesn't all come at once though, so be patient and I'm sure your future projects will reward you.
(...one thing to keep in mind is that if you have nothing left to learn, you will only get bored!)

| | Re: Scandinavian-Troll, from Woodcarving Illistrated. B, Something I've learned is when a project or carving is not looking just like I think it should, I put it aside for awhile.(day, days, week or weeks. However long it takes.) Eventually I'll get a brainstorm or just feel like working on it again and it usually starts coming together. I have a clock I made that took me over a year to carve off and on. Wound up taking a 1st place ribbon at our local fair. Not a big deal but felt pretty good after all the time and aggravation. Just put the carving where you can see it readily and it will keep you thinking of different ways to do what it needs to work out. I usually have two or three carvings going at once and work on each as I feel like it or feel inspired. Make Chips and be safe. Garon |

| | Re: Scandinavian-Troll, from Woodcarving Illistrated. Here's mine. I didn't make a cutout but just carved him from a chunk of wood the recommended size. What are you looking for in the way of tips?

| | Re: Scandinavian-Troll, from Woodcarving Illistrated. Dave and Art,
The print on my computer doesn't look anything like the copy you show on your quote. I don't like the way it looks either. This is what I get without specifing what print to use. Does it look any better? Will just use this for now, since it's easier anyway. Thanks for letting me know what it looked like (yuck!!). | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
