Default The Renegade

Here is a piece that Rocket-39 asked about. I did this one back in 2000 during my "closed eye period". It's another Magua carving from the character in Last of the Mohicians. Did you ever read that book? Boy! Is it hard to read. Anyway, I used to carve my figures with no pupil showing as I worked in a much smaller scale than I do now an I figured that at that height the eyes weren't really that visible. While true at that size it's doesn't apply here as this one is about 20" tall. After I did this one I started opening my eyes, so to speak.

I had a lot of fun with the detail on this one. Especially the rifle in making the flintlock mechnism. I worked out a way of doing it with flattened wire that really captures it. At least I think it does.

I'll post a lot more photos of this piece on my Blog later today when I get a chance.

I don't think the eyes are an issue at all. This is (dare I say..) an "AWESOME" carving Lynn. Thanks for posting the pics.

Great carving, Lynn! I think it's interesting you carved him as a lefty (most people would carry the axe, which is for throwing, in their dominant hand, and the rifle in the non-dominant one). I dont' think the closed eyes are any sort of detraction from a great carving - your detail is incredible.

Lynn, Thanks for sharing this wonderful carving. I agree with the others, the eyes are no issue at all. Your attention to detail is unmatched. you probably carved each individual bead in the beadwork. Each of your carvings deserve and get multiple looks just to see everything you've put into them.. Thanks again.. Tom H

You bring up an interesting idea....the different periods or carving styles an artist goes through. I would really like to see a series of photos showing how you have changed over the years. The first difference I noticed wasn't the eyes but the shirt....you are doing much more detailed clothing now.

Personally, I like the eyes open.....since they are the "window of the soul"! But regardless, its a terrific carving....

Damn!!! Can't believe that was carved. Beautiful work, Lynn! You are a master carver for sure. That would be awesome to see in person, photos never do justice.
