Default Rascal

First of all, thanks to everyone for all the kind comments on my first post. The pictured carving was made from a pattern by William Earl Gray. I needed a minature for a couple shows I want to compete in this year and thought this one might just work out fine. The difficult part was not to say Ouch ! at the end of each woodburnibg stroke when the burner hit my finger. The carving was done with hand tools, mostly a knife.
Additionally, as the result of a request from Snickerbocker, I also posted a face carving of George W at the end of my last post. That one was carved on the corner of a block as taught by Pete LeClair. Hope ya like em.

Jim, Nice LITTLE scene. Which do you prefer to carve, the heads like your Geo. W or the small carvings? Tom H

Hi Tom H,
Thanks all, for the postive comments. I carve very few animals (unless you count some of my caricature pieces) but was fairly happy with Rascal
I prefer to carve faces more than anything. That seemed to be the most difficult item to carve and it took me quite awhile before I was pleased with my results. I have finally gotten to the point where I can usually come up with an expression I am happy with. There is a lot going on within a facial carving and one slip of the knife can give your character a whole different look. I have about 8 faces on the corner of a block and about 10 egg carvings I will post at a later date to give you a look at how much variety can be acheived with the same size piece of wood.
