Default The Quick Fun Carving

Here's a little guy that was easy and fun to do while sitting waiting for my step daughter in the mall the other day ..

Ia'm not a shopper .. so I sit often and just whittle .. It start's up alot of interesting conversations with people you dont know ..

He's basswood and 4 1/2 inches tall ... done completely with a knife .. and will take you about 30 minutes to a hour ( not including the painting of course) ..

These are simple fun carving's that are great for passing time ..

Thanks for letting me show ..

Gene

Great little carving Gene! I love the hat. Looks like this guy just walked into town from the farm.

So when your waiting at the mall, are you carving inside or outside? Just wondering how the mall is about the woodchips.

Mike .. that's what's so much fun about this type of carving .. you can do it anywhere ..

I sit inside the mall or elsewhere and I carry a small cheap fishing box that I bought at wal-mart with me that holds my few knives and v tools and big enough for several cutout's and blanks ...

I just sit down and open the box and use the box to catch my shavings and when Ia'm through .. I close up and empty the box when I get home ..
It works great ..

carving doesnt have to be hard ...

Thanks for asking

Gene

Gene, wonderful little fellow and I like your carving box too! I never take my WIP' s with me because of the wood chips. You have hit upon a super method of carving away from home.

Yea Gene it take me 30 min. to get the knife and wood out of my pocket!!!
That 30 min. comes with years of practice the way i,m going 30 min. takes hrs. Ha Ha.As always you have done a great job.I didn,t think of a tackle box to pack my carving thing in.The box that i use you have to dig into it to find what your looking for no alway safe. Thanks for the tip.

Gene, Great little carving (as all of yours are). I hope you don't think I am out of line when I suggest that you make a tutorial, and post it. You have already shared your drawing of the blank that you start with. I, and I am sure others would greatly benefit from a series of photos that depict the carving steps. You know close ups of each major cut. Thanks for your consideration...Tom H

Tom .. your not out of line at all ... I have never done this before .. so give me some time to figure this out ...

Ia'm certainly no teacher like many of the other wonderful carvers on this site ..

But I guess I can try to work up something ..

Thanks for the advice ...

God Bless all of you ..

Gene

Gene, A picture is worth a 1000 words. The most difficult part of develping training materials is the words that most folks attach to the step-by-step photos. All too often these attempts at describing what to do in words can confuse an otherwise simple and logical step. I have found out that a good sequence of photos can stand alone. This is especially true when the intended audience is not a complete novice at the process being depicted. Words tend to discourage many from putting together training materials and tutorials. I recently made a study stick and it can be used without words. Give it a shot. I know it'll be great...Thanks Tom H

Great carvings Gene. Carving at the mall is a great way to use that time rewardingly while the Mrs or kids shop. You meet the nicest folks, who aren't at all scared of a guy sitting there with a knife in his hand! LOL
