Carl,

I believe BrandantR uses Aspen for his carvings. I have used some but mostly for non-caricature work. The stuff I get is already extremely dry and so it carves nicely but isn't as nice as store-bought bass wood. The price is right, though, because it comes so very cheap.

Carving wet is highly recommended by Bill Burch (YouTube - Bill Burch Bolo Tie) and he actually soaks his Aspen blanks for his bolo ties.

I didn't care for it much and reverted back to the store-bought basswood as recomended by Lynn Doughty earlier in this thread.

Good luck!

LMiller

By the way, your carving looks fantastic!

Thank all of you for the nice comments, and suggestions.

LMiller, and Lynn, thanks for the suggestions. Most of the time I use basswood, but I have quite a few pieces of aspen laying around the shop. I trip over a few of them, get optimistic, and go for it. But being a hard headed, and frugal norsk, I can’t help myself. Going to continue practicing. Also no evidence in ashes.
