Default Ponderin'

It's been a little quite at the Caricature threads so I'll try stirin it up a bit.

What type of caricatures are you recognized for? (ie. animals, situations, little guys, cowboys, etc)

About how many do you make a year, and where do they go?

Any tips for those of us that can use them?

For me, I'm a maker of mice, mostly. I make a couple dozen a year, most of them go to family and friends, I only have 2 of my own at home.
My main tip is one I saw in Wood Carving Illustrated from Floyd Rhadigan, Carve a half hour a day, it will really improve your quality and quanity.

See you all,
Doug

Doug,
For me its simple, its all about humor...the figure itself can be anything but it must have some relation to humor...

...I am by far not the most prolific carver by any means but I don;t keep count either, its just not that important and I felt that if I was worried about how much I produced then that would just be adding stress to a most enjoyable hobby.

...my carvings are owned mostly by myself, family, and friends.

Doug....I can tell by the opening tone of your post that you're trying to stir something up again! Hey! I'm up for that!!!

You probably already know that I specialized in figures of the Old West. The western theme is so broad that the ideas and amount of detail you can recreate is almost limitless.

I probably do about two dozen pieces a year if I'm not working on a larger scene. It takes me about three weeks to complete a simple figure. I carve about 4 hours a day but if I'm working on something special I'll be down there all day! As for tips? You can check out my Blogsite or just drop me a note and I'll give you any advice I can.

I like it when things get a little stirred up.

I carve Santa's. But since I concentrate on faces, I consider them caricatures rather than traditional Santa's.

At the present time I am alternating between cottonwood bark and cypress knees. Some of my carvings have four or five faces on them.

I usually make about thirty carvings a year. Many of them are picked up by collectors but my family also gets their share. I also keep an occasional favorite for myself.

The only tip I could offer, other than "Keep your tools sharpe", is: Keep your eyes open and learn from everyone but make your carvings your own.

Hope I don't stir stuff up too much.
But a little adds flavor, right?

Sludgeguy ... A good question ... Nothing to stir things up ..

Of course I love the little guy's ...my passion ... I consider myself a whittler rather then a carver ... have carved larger figure's .. but I always return to the little fellows in the flat plane style .. They are fun to carve .. take less then a hour to carve most of them and I can sit down anywhere and do them .. and ever since I started carving them .. the demand for them has overwhelmed me ..
And believe me it's not because they are skilled carving's .. but small and tiny figures are very popular with the ladies who want them for their husband's .. Inexpensive and fit just perfect in a what-not shelf ..

How many do I do a year ? .. I stop counting along time ago ...

Tip's .. Have fun doing it ...

Here are some of my messes waiting to be finished ..

Gene

Doug,
I carve about 33 carvings per year+- sometimes I will do just a head or a bust I need the practice , I was given the opt. to teach a carving class last month I told them that the only way to get good was to practice practice practice. and I think faces are the hardest to be good at , so I practice practice.I still make mistakes but try, to no matter how bad its looks, to change things around to make it look better.

I'm with Gene... Don't call me a carver. No disrespect meant to whittler's but I'm more of a whittler than a carver. As for production.... in regards to my carving, less is more. Like Tony, keepin track just takes all the fun out of it!
