Default Playing with Hillbillies

I should spend a little more time with the camera and less with the knife....

I carved a variety of Hillbillies and Hobos lately. These are the first few pictures that I've taken.

The taller guys are about 5 1/2" {1st pic}, the second pic has a pair of 3" figures - a hillbilly and "friend"... The last pic is the same guy as in the second, but with a taller buddy - this one with an empty moonshine jug.

The pictures aren't very good (again), but you can get an idea of what I've tried to carve. I have the stuff to do better pics, but am too lazy to set it all up.

VERY nice, Mitch....great expressions, and I agree with Jimmy.....that lil' foot stance makes a big difference in the character. Nice work on all of them...Bonnie

Yeah Dave, I took the first in the workshop where the lighting was MUCH better.

The "foot action" is a little trick I learned from looking at Pete Ortel's work. By doing something different with the feet, it gives the otherwise static carving an bit of interest = more action.

Good job on the billies, Mitch. The painting looks real good. Think I like the one scratchin' his beard best, but all are good. Just don't carve any more drunken Shriners;O) , as I'm guessing that was your carving a couple years ago at CCA that won roughout class?

To both Jims:

JimmyB - your pallet wood became the two smaller carvings - the little guy and his "lady" friend. By the way, that was my first "carving" from a couple of sketches. This gal has pig tails and all her teeth. You can guess some of the options.

Jim OH - that was indeed my carving. Thanks for recognizing!
