Default Plain Ole Whittlings

I know it is fun to plan out carvings and execute differnt styles to create our pieces ..

But the most fun I have of all is just sitting down out of the blue and just plain ole whittle something I never planed out .. just start out with a cut out shape and never give any thought what it going to look like before you do it ..

Now I know that sounds strange to some , no plan or goal in site .. but it's so much fun and relaxing to just create while your carving ... Sometimes a hat is added .. sometimes a smile or a frown .. sometimes a long face or short face .. hair or no hair .. beard or mustache .. you dont know when you start .. you just know when you finish that thats possibly what you had in mind .. but maybe not exactually like it ..

I whittlted these two fellows while at Mcdonalds watching my grandson and his friend play at the playground .. I didnt know what I wanted .. just loved the relaxiation of doing it ..

Just Plain Ole Whittling I Guess !

I'm practicing on golf balls at the moment, I did one of your tutorials and it sort of looks like it's supposed to, I'll post it when I get some paint on it. Gene, I think you got it right. Both the carved items and the idea of just taking a knife and piece of wood and go. I to, do a lot of the same thing. Some of the fellows in the carving group don't understand. Some get their enjoyment out of making detailed sets of plans and then following them to the letter. But if the truth be known, I carve unplanned pieces of wood, small pieces, cause I'm cheap, and don't like to make plans.

Your finished pieces are proof that plans might be over rated....Good looking pieces...Tom H

Gene... I give you all the credit in the world. I printed out your tutorial on carving one of your little guys and tried my hand at it. It wasn't as easy as it seemed. As soon as I get it painted I'll post it but I've sure got a lot more respect and admiration for your artistry! Great work on these guys!

Plan? What's a plan?

Gene, I love the little guys and know what you mean. Most the time I have a basic outline but seldom a clue where it will lead. Sometime a becomes a Pirate, one time a piece of willow became a very small wizard. Carve for the sake of carving! And thanks for expressing how many of us feel.

The only pieces I have carved without a plan were the Santa faces. It was fun. But part of the fun for me is trying to make the carving look like what I see in my mind. Isn't it wonderful that we can all do our own thing and share the results here.

Gene, I love your little guys. Keep them coming.
