| | Pictures - Old man caricature WIP Below are a couple of pictures of a caricature that I want to use as a pattern for other variations.....
The guy with the white shirt was the original and the guy in the overalls is the the first attempt at a "version".
The picture on the left is three "go-bys" at different stages of the same pattern, but a version of the original carved as a man in a suit.
There should be LOTS of variations using this same pattern. I kept the faces similar to make carving these different poses quicker....It's easy to add a hat, etc.
Any ideas on other versions??????
Oh yeah, the figure is carved from a blank 2" x 1.75" x 8" - the picture on the left is from a longer blank (10") so I don't have to make a separate base. It also helps with the appearance of action as the figures feet are not level (the guy in overalls is done this way also).

| | Re: Pictures - Old man caricature WIP Mitchell, I love those! I especially like the one with the coat and tie. The way the coat is pulled back so you can see the shirt underneath is really cool. The possibilities of different styles are endless. Very nice work! |

| | Re: Pictures - Old man caricature WIP Mitchell,
Nice carvings,
and a great pattern for dressing further charters differently, looks like you got all the fragile parts supported well,
with some chin whiskers hat and jug/lantern maybe a corncob pipe you got hillbilly,
carve it with long hair & breasts, you got a manly - homely looking gal,
A long wooden tool box with hammer and saw ... carpenter
shorten the legs & back, put on a cap with a spinner blade and give it an all day sucker theres a kid..
Make one with the crimson red suit and fur trimmed and ya got a skinny santa..
looks like 'you got a gud en thyre,'
im not critic on style, and i have honestly tried to leave the chipped finish on carvings but they look so unfinished to me i just got to smooth them out..., I know i got to work on that attitude or ill never learn flat plane style,
keep on chipping, you can get 10 easily out of that figure pattern. |

| | Re: Pictures - Old man caricature WIP There is heavy influence in my style from Pete LeClair...as from Harold Enlow. Pete on the facial expressions and Harold on the proportions. The little "trick" that I did with the feet slanting on the base was learned from Peter Ortel. I did, however, draw the patten out myself before actually carving.
Yes, Thomp, I do leave LOTS of knife marks on my carvings.....It's more a matter of laziness than anything. I MAY say that it's my "style" or that I do it on purpose, but quite frankly, it's just easier to leave them there! I'm joking of course - I just like to see the cuts and they (to me) make the work really look like it's carved.
I think I'm gonna carve another this afternoon.......not sure what it'll come out to be yet though! I like Hobos, Santas and Hillbillies as subjects, so it may be one of those.

| | Re: Pictures - Old man caricature WIP Well, Santa it is....hopefully his facial expression matches his "activity"... it'll look better when painted - about 2-3 months from now .
I "messed up" by using a little larger piece of wood than the first few (2" x 2") and got his head a little bigger than I wanted (in comparison to his body). |
