| | Ozark caricature carvings ? Anyone out there want to share any pictures of there Ozark caricature carvings or any old man carvings?
I have been carving off and on for a long time but have really been carving wood spirits for the past two years or so and now I want to venture into the world of Ozarks caricatures and old men or women. Donna T sent me some really funny hillbilly patterns and a few others that are fantastic, .
There is a rough out of "A hillbilly with a jug" on it's way to my house now from Rick at Little shavers and I'm going to carve an old "walker" coon hound to go with it.
It would be great If I could see some of the ones you all have done. Thanks , Mike

| | Re: Ozark caricature carvings ? Thanks Hi-Ho, Lol, Thats a cute little hillbilly, that's for sure. Your other carvings are great too and I can see you are a true artist .
It's hard to believe that more people are not interested in this type of caricature's. Guess I'm on my own. What really got me into this is the works of Emil Janel and his concept of caricatures. Thanks again, Mike

| | Re: Ozark caricature carvings ? Mike, I thought a bit about this reply but decided to go ahead.
Here are some pictures I took at Dave Stetson's studio in 2003 when we took a old man class. I emphaize that these are NOT my carvings but they are of an old man. Mine is semi OK (well, it's the same kind of wood). |

| | Re: Ozark caricature carvings ? Well, back to the drawing board. I'd already uploaded it as a test. Then I deleted it. Now when I try to upload it the system say I already uploaded it. Renamed it and tried again, but the system insisted I uploaded it already (which I did, but deleted it). Ahhhhhhhhh. |

| | Re: Ozark caricature carvings ? Dryheat, Now that's what I'm talking about! That's a great carving. If I could even come close to something like that I would be happy. Thank you for showing it and I think I'll save it as a refence or study picture. Mike
Ed, Feel free to email me the pictures if you want to. Sure would like to see what you are working on. I need all the help I can get.
The rough out I'm waiting on from Rick will take me twice as long as most people because it just seems to work that way for me on anything new. I have a habit of doing every cut in my mind before I lay a knife to the wood, Lol. Mike

| | Re: Ozark caricature carvings ? This is one where I was experimenting with finishes. One coat of minwax water-based wood stain, English Oak. No sealer or anything else, just dipped it in and wiped it off. Going to seal it with minwax dark paste finishing wax if I decide to keep it. Came out of one of Harold Enlow's books. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
