Mike I carve a " hillbilly" years ago with him holding a rifle with a squirrl on the back ot stock of the rifle and a "jug"(XXX) in the other hand with a couple of hounds beside of him. He stands about 14 inches and the hounds about 4 to 6 inches. My Ozark(hillbilly) in-laws took it. Next time I am over there will take a picture and post it or send it. In the mean time, I can copy some pictures I have of some "hillbillies" And send those to you.

Thanks Kenny, That would be great! I have been uploading pics off the net. It's good for me to have some to study just for the way they were carved. Mike

Sorry to take so long to get back but I’ve been straight out this week

Rocket39 The carving are finished with a coat of BLO which is allowed to dry for at least a day, this brings out the wood grain. Then they are sprayed with a matt seal coat and painted with acrylics that are thinned way down. The key here is to use very thin coats. After painting, two coats of spray matt are applied. This weekend I’ll try to post a picture of a Santa and a fisherman I carved and my wife painted

Thomp2 the old man with a cane is about 10” and the other figure is 8” tall.

Mike-in-WV I’ll send you a PM and try to answer any question you may have.

DryHeat, I have been doing a little research on Dave Stetson and found several of his carvings including the one you show us here. He is known to carve in the style of Emil Janel and I can see why. He does carve just a little more of the caricature in his work than Emil did but still not as much as others. I really like his style and his work is beautiful. One can only hope to carve as well as Dave and a few others like Will Hayden, Keith Morrill, Steve Prescott, Dennis Thorton, Bob Travis and others greats. Thanks again, Mike

Mike in W V

Dave Stetson is a great fan of Emil Janel. He has many books about Janel. Also Dave has made a carving similar to one of Janel’s, a man holding a violin.

The cowboy that you posted is one of Dave’s rough outs and one of my favorites. The one you posted doesn't have a cigar in his mouth which I really think adds to the charter of the piece.I believe it was the third class I took when I made one. Since then I’ve made 3 more for my kids.

ES, I knew that Dave was a fan of Emils and that he did some carvings in his style. Did alot of reading about Dave and Emil on the net.

They are both my heroes,Lol. But I haven't seen anyone yet who can match Emils carving style and that's the way it should be, Mike
