Eric, I'm not sure what you are wanting the black to do. You could add red, blue or green to the black, depending on the outcome you want and the color wood you are covering. I like oil paint black, but with the bottled acrylic paints the black does seem a little weak. I quite often mix a dark blue with a dark red and use that as black, seems to have more substance to it. But thinned down it might look more purple or plum. Play with it a little and see what you think.

Thanks for the tip. I guess to me that when i paint black, slightly thinned down it covers kinda splotchy. Does that make sense?

Do you seal the wood before you paint? Listen to me giving advice! I'm learning as I go along, just telling you what others do.

Seal before? No I don't, think I heard someone else months ago mention that. How exactly does that affect the application?

I was interested in that question too, so on my last carving I tried it. I didn't actually use a "wood sealer", I used tung oil and really let it soak in, then I painted with acrylics. I have always been told not to mix oil with water paints. But I have to say, the paint went on smoother, didn't blotch and since I covered it with poly I feel it will be fairly permanent. There is a ton of info on this site and many options to try..as I said before I am just stumbling my way around in the forest of knowledge.
